When I was growing up, my birthday often fell on the day we returned back to school after winter break. So, it was always a little bit of a bummer (I say little bit because I was the nerdy type who loved school, but hey, even nerds enjoyed time off.) Going back to school was bad enough, but since everyone was so excited about seeing each other again and talking about what Santa brought them, my birthdays often passed without much attention at all. I always felt a little disappointed that as soon as the year had started, my birthday would come and go, an anti-climactic non-event.
This year, my birthday also fell on the day my kids returned to school after almost 2.5 weeks home with me. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my kids and enjoy the time I spend with them...but trying to find ways to keep them occupied and stimulated can be challenging, and I would be lying if I said that I wasn't a little relieved to have school and our daily routines start up again. Having a little me time was a wonderful birthday treat!
The day was somewhat normal filled with the morning rush, drop-off/pick-ups, homework and routines. But we also added in some birthday fun, diversions from the usual--movies, frozen yogurt, pizza. It was a wonderful birthday and a great way to kick off my new year (which now, as an adult, I'm glad coincides with the beginning of the calendar year.) A new year of possibilities, challenges, mountains to climb. I'm so excited!
Getting everyone up and out was a bit rough today.
There's a bit of excitement to get back to school...
All ready for preschool...
I went to the gym and practiced yoga for an hour,
then spent an hour with a personal trainer.
Fun in retrospect, but at the time, I was pretty
mad at the trainer and myself for putting me through
such torture.
Since the kids had a half-day today and no Kumon,
we went to the movies and saw
Skyler said that since it was my birthday, I could pick
the movie...
Huge popcorn.
And more popcorn.
Menchies after the show.
Picking Evan up at school. Seeing his smiling face
as he runs out to see me is always a treat.
I requested pizza for my birthday dinner---good pizza.
Kurt did some research and found a place downtown that
sells New York-style pizza...here I am with a spinach,
garlic and ricotta cheese pie. YUM.
Thanks, Ka-to!
Ice cream cake to top off the evening.
Make-a-wish helpers.
What a long, busy, fun 42nd birthday!
